CLAIM: Beth Van Duyne and her supporters are falsely claiming that Candace Valenzuela wants to defund the police.

FACT: Valenzuela has never said she wants to defund the police and she has stated her opposition to that position on the record numerous times.

Minutes after Van Duyne launched her false attack, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram debunked her claim and reported “In a previous interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Valenzuela stated steadfastly that she was not in favor of defunding the police.” Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 9/18/20

FACT: Valenzuela wants to raise wages for law enforcement and invest in specialists that can assist them in responding to mental health and nonviolent emergencies.

Cash Bail

CLAIM: Beth Van Duyne’s allies have falsely claimed that Candace Valenzuela’s plan to end cash bail would allow violent criminals out of jail

FACT: Valenzuela wants to end cash bail only for non-violent offenders and her crime plan would keep violent criminals in jail.

Energy Policy

CLAIM: Beth Van Duyne and her allies are falsely attacking Candace Valenzuela’s energy plan.

FACT: Valenzuela does not support ending oil and gas development and permitting in Texas. She believes that local communities in which drilling takes place should have control over the permitting process. Valenzuela believes those communities should make informed decisions that take into account the economic and environmental impact of drilling.
PROOF:

The Dallas Morning News has reported that Valenzuela believes that “fracking should be a local decision, driven by science.” Dallas Morning News, 10/12/20

In an interview with the Editorial Board at the Dallas Morning News Valenzuela was asked by the Editor of Editorials, Brendan Miniter,
“On oil and gas permitting, do you oppose that within the State of Texas? Should new wells be drilled at this time?”
Valenzuela responded by saying “I still think it should be an issue of community consent.”
Miniter followed up and asked “So, if a community consents, then [drilling could] go forward?”

FACT: Valenzuela wants Texas to remain an energy leader and has called for investments in clean energy and infrastructure in order to create jobs and strengthen the Texas energy economy.

FACT: As a school board trustee, Valenzuela supported investments in technical and vocational training and she supports a plan to continue those investments and that will empower workers to earn well-paid clean energy jobs.

Valenzuela said “As a school board trustee, I pushed for greater investments in our vocational training, and I think that as we’re moving forward we need to start expanding that education to include green energy technology.” [E&E, 09/08/20]

CLAIM: Extreme anti-choice groups supporting Beth Van Duyne have claimed that Candace Valenzuela believes in unlimited abortion.

FACT: Valenzuela is pro-choice, but she wants it to be an actual choice. That’s why she supports investments in paid family and medical leave so that every mother can afford to care for their family.
