DALLAS, TX -- Today, Candace Valenzuela released the following statement:

“First, I want to thank all the volunteers and supporters who knocked on doors, hosted virtual campaign events, and made hundreds of thousands of phone calls in support of our grassroots movement. I have new friends and role models, some of whom are not yet old enough to drive. Now that nearly all the votes have been counted and there is no longer a path, we are conceding. I want to congratulate Beth Van Duyne on her victory.

I know the struggles working families are facing, and I stepped up to run for Congress because the opportunities that my great grandfather, my grandparents, and my parents fought for, that helped me go from being homeless as a kid, sleeping in a kiddie pool outside a gas station, to become the first in my family to go to college have been dwindling for a generation. North Texans responded to our campaign because we put the issues of working families first.

The first time I stepped up to run for office, others told me that I couldn’t do it because I lacked gravitas and, as a mother and a woman of color, I didn’t fit the image of an elected official. Even though we didn’t win this race, we’ve forced the gatekeepers of the political process to reimagine who belongs at the table. There is still so much work to be done and I will continue to be a tireless advocate for our schools and all working families across North Texas.”

“Primero, quiero agradecer a todos los voluntarios y simpatizantes que tocaron puertas, organizaron eventos de campaña virtuales e hicieron miles de llamadas telefónicas, para apoyar nuestro movimiento de base. Tengo nuevos amigos y modelos a seguir, algunos de los cuales aún no tienen la edad suficiente para conducir. Ahora que se han contado casi todos los votos y ya no hay camino, estamos concediendo. Quiero felicitar a Beth Van Duyne por su victoria.

Sé las luchas que enfrentan las familias trabajadoras. Me postule al Congreso porque las oportunidades por las que lucharon mi bisabuelo, mis abuelos y mis padres, me ayudaron a pasar de ser una niña sin hogar durmiendo en una piscina para niños afuera de una gasolinera, para convertirme en la primera de mi familia en ir a la universidad y esas oportunidades se han ido reduciendo durante una generación. Los habitantes del Norte de Texas respondieron a nuestra campaña, porque colocamos como prioridad los problemas de las familias trabajadoras.

La primera vez que me presenté para postularme para un cargo, algunos me dijeron que no podía hacerlo porque me faltaba seriedad y que como madre y mujer de color, no encajaba con la imagen de un funcionario electo. Aunque no ganamos esta carrera, hemos obligado a los guardianes del ejercicio político a reimaginar quién hace parte de este proceso. Todavía hay mucho trabajo por hacer y continuaré siendo una defensora incansable de nuestras escuelas y de todas las familias trabajadoras del Norte de Texas ”.
